And You Thought College Tuition Was Expensive

Daily Stat | November 14, 2012 | Topics: Economic OutlookInvesting for Income

39%: Tuition and Fees component of an in-state student's total budget

While tuition costs are significant, don't forget about other expenses in your college planning. According to The College Board's Annual Survey of Colleges, tuition could account for only 39% of some students' budgets. For in-state students living on campus at public four-year schools, room and board was actually the largest expense, at 41% of the total budget. The remaining 20% was accounted for by books and supplies, transportation, and other expenses.

These average breakdowns vary, as budgets for out-of-state students tilt more heavily toward tuition and fees (61% of expenses), with a smaller percentage devoted to room and board (26%). Thus it's important to think about a student's specific situation to adequately plan for college.
