OBSR assigns ratings ranging from A—AAA to funds based on an evaluation process that combines extensive quantitative analysis (both when initially assessing a fund and continuously to justify its rating) with regular in-depth interview-based research analysis and professional expertise. The interview process focuses on assessment of qualitative factors such as management team investment experience and investment process which OBSR believe contribute to long–term performance. Morningstar analysts assign a Morningstar Qualitative Rating™ to funds using a five-point scale ranging from Elite to Impaired. Analysts rate funds on a relative basis, against a pan-European and Asian universe of funds in a similar peer group. The ratings scale is unique from other firms because it includes negative ratings which allow analysts to assess and rate poor funds, as well as good funds.
